Objectives
The predecessor of IRA (BRALUP) was established to address a range of issues related to resource use in Tanzania. The overall objectives was to address the whole question of sustainable development. The institute , therefore . Has the following main objectives:

To carry out research and develop researches capacities pertinent to the social. cultural. Environmental and economic development of Tanzania.

To organize and assist research activities carried out by the staff of the institute and the staff from other departments in field in the university

To co-ordinate and assist research carried out by staff seconded from the government, research fellows from other research institution and visiting research workers

To collect information necessary for research activities of the institute

To furnish advice upon request, to government , public and other organizations.

To contribute to the training research staff within areas of its competence and to provide specialized teaching materials for the university of Dar=es-salaam and related institution
